Purdue University speech scientist Jessica Huber has watched people with Parkinson’s disease struggle to speak, which often led to social isolation and depression. She spent time with these patients as she organized support groups and involved them in her research program. The experience inspired Huber to invent a simple wearable device to help improve the world of these individuals, and it led to the development of her own company, SpeechVive.

New cancer immunotherapy shows great promise in early research

A new approach to cancer immunotherapy has the potential to be a universal treatment for solid tumors, according to researchers at Purdue University. Two Purdue scientists worked together to develop and test the new treatment that works not by attacking the cancer cells themselves, but by focusing on immune system cells that, ironically, feed the tumor and block other immune system cells from destroying it.

New transistor design disguises key computer chip hardware from hackers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A hacker can reproduce a circuit on a chip by discovering what key transistors are doing in a circuit – but not if the transistor “type” is undetectable. Purdue University engineers have demonstrated a way to disguise which transistor is which by building them out of a sheet-like material called black phosphorus. This built-in security measure would prevent hackers from getting enough information about the circuit to reverse engineer it. The findings appear in a paper published Monday (Dec. 7) in Nature Electronics. Reverse engineering chips is a common practice – both for hackers and companies investigating intellectual property infringement. Researchers also are developing x-ray imaging techniques that wouldn’t require actually touching a chip to reverse engineer it.

Purdue DIRTS Team Digs Deep for Win

A team from Purdue has been awarded fourth place in an international competition sponsored by Bayer. The Purdue DIRTS (Degradable and Intelligent Radio Transmitting Sensor) team won 10,000 euros and the opportunity to showcase their solution in front of representatives from key industry leaders, startups and institutions during a presentation in October. Purdue’s team was comprised of Sarath Gopalakrishnan, PhD student, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Jose Waimin, PhD student, School of Materials Engineering; Nithin Raghunathan, research scientist, Birck Nanotechnology Center; and led by Rahim Rahimi, assistant professor of materials engineering and of electrical and computer engineering.
